Profit with Principle - Financial Advice that's right for you

An Introduction to Ethical and Socially Responsible Investment

A brief guide to ethical investment is provided in the general introduction section below.

To access more detailed information about the current range of ethical investment funds, we suggest you review IMA's Guide to Ethical and Socially Responsible Investment. This information is provided by the Investment Management Association (IMA), who are not authorised to give financial advice. However, the information enclosed is provided by F & C Asset Management, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority.

Another excellent introduction to Ethical Investment is provided at the Trustnet site.

There is also a useful summary at www.unbiased.co.uk.

Finally Ethical Investment research Services (EIRIS) a global provider of independent research into the social, environmental and ethical performance of companies has launched it's free 169 page guide to Green and Ethical Investment Funds, and this can be found here.

General Introduction

Ethical, or socially responsible investment (SRI) as it is now becoming known is something most fair minded people agree with. Its plain to see that making a profit at any cost is both morally questionable and environmentally unsustainable.

Surveys suggest that the vast majority of investors do not want their financial gain to be at the expense of other people, animals or the environment. A 'DECENT' return in both senses of the word is what most people are looking for.

Unfortunately, unless we have deliberately chosen an ethical option for our money, we are likely to be investing in companies whose products and services we may disagree with.

This website is designed to encourage you to make prudent financial choices which keep your moral integrity intact!

Choices!

It is obvious that a pacifist will not want to invest in arms manufacturers, or a vegetarian in firms which process meat. However, isn't it also the case that most of us feel strongly enough about some social or environmental issue, to want to avoid making a profit from investing in such areas? Examples of these 'no go areas' include pornography, tobacco and pollution.

We can also justifiably feel we are doing something worthwhile, when we seek to support investment in companies that provide positive goods and services, look after their staff and give generously to the local community.

In summary, Socially Responsible Investment gives the choice to avoid investing in companies whose products and services we feel unhappy with and to support those who are seen to be helping others and the environment.

Good News!

There are more and more ethical financial options available these days. Whether for the student opening their first bank account, or the retiring professional with a lump sum to invest, there is likely to be an appropriate socially responsible solution.

The good news is that SRI offers the opportunity to put your money where your morals are, without giving up the potential for a financially profitable return.
